The Origin, Training, Evaluation and Status of Construction Inspectors

by Lionel W. Vincent, General Portland Inc, Los Angeles, CA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Quality of Inspectors? In Search of Excellence

Abstract:

Inspection of construction is mandated by law. Design engineers cannot disclaim their responsibility for construction inspection by citing self-serving language in the contract documents. Building officials are responsible for code enforcement, but are not qualified to render decisions and resolve questions that are in the domain of the structural engineer. Construction inspectors, properly trained and certified, are the logical extension of the structural engineer; they provide competent professional inspection services at the job site.
