Abstract:

The boundary integral equations (BIEs) are formulated for scattering problems of elastic waves by a cavity or a crack in a three dimensional half space. Two formulations based on the Green's displacement and traction formulae are shown for the scattering from a cavity. On the other hand, it is demonstrated that only the Green's traction formula is effective for crack problems. In numerical implementation, the BIE entirely free from a singular integral is derived by considering a rigid body translation for any bounded region. Numerical examples are presented for the scattering of elastic waves in a three dimensional half space including a finite cylindrical cavity and are compared with the two dimensional solutions.
