Part of: Super and Parallel Computers and Their Impact on Civil Engineering

Abstract:

The increasing complexity of today's civil engineering applications requires increasing detail and analyses with associated increased demands on computer resources. At the high end of the computer performance ratings is a family of computers often referred to as supercomputers. Recent advances in computer hardware have resulted in phenomenal performance ratings and a newer class of machines referred to as mini-supercomputers which offer high performance at lower prices. This paper will discuss the characteristics of today's mini-supercomputer and supercomputers as well as their advantages.
