Abstract:

Current detention basin design procedure is to design the outlet structure for two or more return periods. This is sometimes done by combining weirs and/or orifices of various sizes and shapes immediately in front of a pipe or box culvert. Tests on four plexiglas models have produced some preliminary equations which predict the calibrated flows within a reasonable range of accuracy. Recommendations are made where more research is needed.
