Abstract:

Recent advances in artificial intelligence techniques have created a mechanism for incorporating empirical knowledge into algorithmic reservoir planning and management models. The authors' approach for the development of a prototype expert system for reservoir operation includes: identification and derivation of factual and empirical rules by interviewing field specialists; formatting the derived expert rules to be used in a knowledge engineering language (shell) program, which leads to a knowledge-based expert system. This expert system can be a valuable research tool for examination and validation of the empirical rules and procedures embedded in any hydroplanning process.
