Abstract:

Southern California Edison Company has performed field uplift load tests on concrete driven piles, cast-in-place straight shaft piles and cast-in-place belled piers along transmission line routes and other facilities within its service territory. Field exploratory borings and cone penetrometer test (CPT) soundings were placed at the test sites to identify the soil types, density and strength characteristics of the subsurface materials. In this paper, uplift load tests from 24 SCE sites along the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Intermountain Power Project transmission line are correlated with CPT data. The actual pile and pier uplift capacities are compared with the predicted capacities using side friction values from CPT soundings.
