Abstract:

A method is proposed to predict the ultimate bearing pressure for footings on clay using data from cone penetration tests. This method relates the ratio of ultimate soil bearing for a footing, q//u, to cone tip bearing, q//c, with an increase for embedment of the footing. Analysis of footing or plate load tests for 16 case histories indicates that the bearing capacity can be predicted with relative accuracy.
