by Joseph P. Welsh, GKN Hayward Baker, Odenton, MD, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Use of In Situ Tests in Geotechnical Engineering

Abstract:

Presented are the status of three in situ testing techniques in relation to Ground Modification and a general overview of eight Ground Modification methods with case histories and appropriate testing methods. The paper concludes with an experience chart listing the in situ test results that can be obtained, areas where more research and development is needed, and budget costs of in situ testing and Ground Modification techniques. Types of tests discussed are standard penetration, cone penetration, and dilatometer. Ground modification techniques discussed include dynamic deep compaction, vibro-compaction, grouting, and others.
