by Michael Yachnis, US Naval Facilities Engineering, Command, Alexandria, VA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Ports '86

Abstract:

Because of the hazards which exist during the ship docking, undocking, launching and while the ship is being built or repaired, the Navy has determined a requirement exists for system certification of graving docks, marine railways, vertical lifts and shipbuilding ways. This paper contains lessons learned during the documentation review and the material condition survey of graving docks, marine railways, vertical lifts and shipbuilding ways. It will include comments on current design procedures and criteria, materials and construction methods. In addition, invaluable experiences will be discussed associated with restoration of these facilities.
