Abstract:

This paper investigates the degree to which a berthing impact force is distributed to the pile bents of batter pile supported pier structures. A procedure is developed to estimate the force distribution, taking into account the relative stiffness of the deck and the piles. This is done by modeling the structure as a beam on elastic foundation and investigating the factors affecting both deck and pile stiffness. It presents the procedure in an easy-to-use graphical format and compares results obtained in this way with those from more elaborate computer models. The procedure allows the engineer to greatly improve the efficiency of the preliminary design process and focus on the factors that have the most significant effect on the cost of pier structures.
