Structural Design of Container Cranes

by Michael A. Jordan, Liftech Consultants Inc, Oakland, CA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Ports '86

Abstract:

The shipping industry uses container cranes to move cargo containers on and off ships. Container cranes have characteristics common to all crane structures, but many characteristics are peculiar only to heavily used container cranes. The designer must investigate impact loads, fatigue loads, and wind loads including the effects of wind induced vibration. He must understand the statistical basis for development of allowable fatigue stresses, and he must develop a fracture control plan.
