Prestressed Concrete Piling?Design vs. As-Built

by Richard C. Wittkop, Port of Los Angeles, CA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Ports '86

Abstract:

The proper design, manufacture, handling and installation of prestressed concrete piles is essential to their structural integrity and long life. A quality control program must be designed with an awareness of past construction problems. Concentric alignment of steel tendons and spiral reinforcement is critical for design performance; concrete cover and permeability are important factors in control of corrosion; proper pile storage and handling are necessary to maintain pile alignment. Case histories of major marine construction projects in the Port of Los Angeles are discussed.
