Abstract:

A revolution in ocean shipping operations, affecting both landside equipment and cargo handling methods, is underway. In today's container shipping industry, maximum efficiency and customer service is increasingly achieved by the carrier that has a fully integrated intermodal network on which to move the customers' goods. These recent trends, and their impact on Sea-Land's container terminals, are the subject of this paper. It focuses primarily on the impact of load centering and container terminal/inland feeder linkage.
