Abstract:

The subject of this paper is a floating pier which is currently under evaluation as a more cost-effective solution for berthing Navy ships. This new approach to pier design was sponsored by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command as part of the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory's Port Systems Project. The many advantages of a dual deck, floating pier include: increased operational effectiveness, off-site construction, mobility and lower life cycle cost. The structural configuration of the floating pier is discussed, concluding with an industry evaluation of construction approaches.
