Abstract:

Unless specified otherwise in the Contract Documents, Visual Inspection will be performed on all fabrication/erection welding for projects that utilize the Specifications for the Design, Fabrication and Erection of Structural Steel for Buildings, as prepared by the American Institute of Steel Construction. Section 1. 26. 4 of this Specification entitled 'Inspection of Welding' stipulates that all inspections are to be performed in accordance with the requirements as established in Section 6 of the American Welding Society AWS D1. 1, 'Structural Welding Code - Steel'. Author describes the rules and regulations of welding inspection in different phases of welding. Necessity of inspection prior to welding is stressed in the article. Inspection after welding including non destructive testing is also presented. Certified Welding Inspector program is discussed - He is of the opinion that they should have the Welding Inspector to have at least taken an examination to show that he has the basic knowledge and demonstrates that he can conduct an inspection properly.
