Abstract:

Seismic isolation concept has been extensively developed and applied in New Zealand and is receiving increased attention in the United States. Two bridge projects have incorporated the concept and another is in the preliminary design phase. In addition to these bridge projects, four buildings have or will incorporate the concept. This paper discusses various seismic isolation concepts, design application, and a three-span bridge example.
