Abstract:

A hybrid approach to study the dynamic through-the-soil coupling between adjacent foundations embedded in a uniform soil model when subjected to harmonic external forces and seismic excitation is presented. The hybrid approach is based on the use of the Green's functions for a uniform half-space combined with a finite element model of the finite volume of soil removed for the foundations. Applications of an iterative scheme to obtain the coupling between foundations and of a reciprocity theorem to obtain the response of the foundations to seismic waves are presented. The use of the hybrid approach is illustrated by numerical results for a two-dimensional antiplane shear model involving two identical foundations.
