Abstract:

Strong-motion accelerograms are used to examine the response of a multiple-span highway bridge to earthquake loading. Estimates of modal frequencies and damping values for the first two horizontal modes of the bridge are obtained from the recorded structural responses using a technique of system identification. These values are compared with the results of a finite element dynamic analysis of the bridge. Throughout the study, it has been desirable to extract from the data set as much information as possible, because of the limited earthquake response data available from such structures.
