Abstract:

In the design of modern liquid storage tanks, it is of technical importance to examine their safety against earthquake damage. The methodologies used in design do not account for the major collapse mechanisms and reflect inadequate understanding of this complex fluid-structure system. To provide a better understanding of storage-tank-collapse, a cylindrical shell subject to vertical compression and a cylindrical tank subject to horizontal fluid load has been studied. Nonlinear finite element methods are used for the model, both large deflections and material nonlinearities are included.
