Abstract:

Understanding how a simple structural system responds to a dynamically applied load is a difficult concept for most students to grasp. The fundamental mathematical theory of this behavior is presented in the classical textbooks; however, the traditional theoretical coverage tends to overwhelm the student, and leaves him/her with no clear understanding of what is happening in the real physical environment of the problem. To aid in the development of an understanding of the underlying concepts of the dynamic response of structural systems to various types of loading conditions an interactive microcomputer program was developed which incorporates a visual component into the learning environment.
