Abstract:

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of solving nonlinear structural analysis problems on a desktop engineering workstation. The paper summarizes the main features of a comprehensive general purpose nonlinear finite element structural analysis software system and its conversion and use in solving engineering problems on a modern engineering workstation. Results are given for three structural analysis test cases which demonstrate this feasibility. Comparisons of CPU solution times given show that workstation performance can be similar to widely-used scientific minicomputers (e. g. , DEC VAX computer).
