Abstract:

Finite element formulations for analysis of the overall response of concrete bridge girders prestressed with external tendons is described. The analytical procedure includes several nonlinear effects that develop in the response of external prestressed bridges: cracking and nonlinear stress-strain behavior of concrete, yielding of passive steel reinforcement, yielding of prestressing tendons, and opening of joints between bridge segments. The nonlinear force-displacement relationships for a beam, external tendon, and joint element are presented, and solution procedures are discussed.
