Wind Loads on Electrical Transmission Structures

by Kishor C. Mehta, Texas Tech Univ, Lubbock, TX, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Innovations in the Design of Electrical Transmission Structures

Abstract:

Guidelines for structural loads on electrical transmission structures were prepared by the American Society of Civil Engineers' Committee on Electrical Transmission Structures. Discussions on climatic loads that include wind, ice, and windstorms are part of these guidelines. A summary of wind loads is presented. The wind loads are discussed in terms of wind speed, probability of occurrence, height and terrain effects, gust response factors, and force coefficients. A brief discussion on tornadoes is also presented.
