Abstract:

This paper presents a review of operating and maintenance alternatives for small scale hydroelectric plants. The cost of operating a hydro project is largely determined by decisions made in each of the four phases of development prior to operation. The paper provides brief examples of some of the pre-operation considerations. The remainder of this paper focuses on operations after project completion, and the following topics are addressed: history of automatic operations, operations, maintenance, personnel requirements, administration, manual for operations and maintenance, and cost of operations and maintenance.
