Abstract:

Between 1964 and 1968, eight 212 in pump discharge diameter Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton vertical pump/turbines with Westinghouse motor/generators were installed in Philadelphia Electric Company's Muddy Run Pumped Storage Station. This paper discusses the major rehabilitation work performed on the pump/turbine units in 1973 to 1975 and 1983 to 1985. This paper includes discussions covering: a brief review of the first major rehabilitation in 1973 to 75; rehabilitation of the carbon steel wicket gates, including the overlaying of the gate stems with stainless steel; rehabilitation of the carbon steel pump/turbine runners including, crack and cavitation repairs and dynamic balancing; installation of an upper draft tube insert; line boring of head cover and bottom ring gate stem bushing bores in the field.
