Abstract:

This paper describes the safety investigations performed to evaluate the dams, associated with the Merwin and Yale Hydroelectric Projects, for the effects of severe floods and earthquakes. The investigations included: calculation of the maximum flow rates and water levels associated with the probable Maximum Flood(PMF); estimation of the maximum ground accelerations produced by a Maximum Credible Earthquake(MCE); field and laboratory investigations to determine the strength and deformation parameters of the in-situ materials; and stress and stability analyses of the Merwin and Yale Dams.
