Hoover Dam Plus Fifty Years Equals El Cajon Dam

by Jerome M. Raphael, Univ of California, Berkeley, CA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Waterpower '85

Abstract:

The completion of El Cajon arch dam on the fiftieth anniversary of the completion of Hoover Dam has given the opportunity to compare design and construction of two concrete arch dams constructed on similar sites after a half-century of engineering progress. Each dam represents the best of its time; the differences represent the cumulative contributions of fifty years of design, research, and construction. The paper discusses the dam sites, dam cross sections, spillways, stress analysis, cement and concrete, grout curtains, and construction.
