Abstract:

Interchangeable turbine runners can be used to increase energy generation at some hydroelectric power sites. Two different turbine runners can be designed for different design heads or flows but with the same physical dimensions so that the runners can be switched when flow or head conditions change significantly. Pacific Gas and Electric Company has several powerhouses under construction which use interchangeable runners to improve the projects' economics.
