Development of the Standardized Francis Turbine

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Abstract:

Initial machine selections to address higher head sites included small custom Francis turbines and standard pumps running in the turbine mode. As the former proved too costly and the latter too inefficient, the need for a line of standardized Francis turbines became evident. This paper outlines the development of such a line, including hydraulic, mechanical and manufacturing development as well as application criteria. With the aid of technologically advanced design and manufacturing techniques, a low cost, fast production time product has been achieved while maintaining world class turbine efficiencies.
