Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to examine the major factors and steps which affect the valuation process of adding hydro power plants to an integrated hydro-thermal generation system. Results from a simulated power operation model indicate that the sequencing of adding hydro power plants has significant effects on the value determined by the system production costing simulation. The relative sequence effect and other parameters identified by this study are expected to be valuable for generation planners in terms of the economic justification and prioritizing individual hydro power plant additions. Other important aspects of the hydro-thermal integration are also discussed. Potential applications using the modeling approach from this study as well as test cases and model description are presented with respect to their results, implications and limitations.
