Abstract:

An accurate classification of small hydro sites is introduced. Class 'C' small hydro developments utilize favourable topographical and hydraulic gradients along the same stream or between two or more streams for the generation of hydro power. They are generally characterized by long power conduits. The additional costs of these power conduits and of the special measures required to assure smooth speed regulation with minimum pressure rise have always called for optimum size installation. The initial evaluation of Class 'C' small scale hydro sites should include an investigation into the viability of a cascade arrangement of two or more installations as an option to a single installation under the total head. This paper addresses all the issues involved and presents a rather new and well defined approach for the optimization process.
