Abstract:

This project is being installed at the Dry Falls Dam, Coulee City, Washington, adjacent to the Main Canal Headworks which controls the irrigation releases to the Columbia Basin Project. In the future, irrigation water will be released through one 26,000 kW bulb unit to generate an estimated 86 Gwh of annual energy. A steeply inclined, accelerating intake was adopted to reduce excavation. Dimensional criteria controlling overall layout is discussed for consideration by designers of future bulb turbine installations. Proposals for the supply of the turbine generating equipment were requested and received for both a single bulb unit and two tube units to confirm the recommended arrangement. Handling requirements at the site as they relate to permanent and temporary crane requirements were studied.
