Abstract:

This paper gives an examination of problems and prospects of incorporating more current highway safety knowledge into the design process through promising communication linkages between involved disciplines. Expressive awareness is presented as a prerequisite to the solution of problems such as the intransigence of old safety hazards, multiplicity of participants, lack of education and training, and lack of information integration in the design process. Recognizing and properly addressing the entire spectrum of motivational predispositions representing both the causes and the solution potentials of safety problems are critical points on the critical path of any systems approach to establishment of needed communication linkages within and between disciplines. Examples of this approach are presented.
