Abstract:

This document constitutes the proceedings for a National Science Foundation funded workshop to discuss research needs pertaining to the buildings side of infrastructure. It includes discussion of research needs associated with assessing building condition, repair and rehabilitation techniques, implementation and project monitoring. Papers cover the owners' perspective, international experiences and specific discussions relating to the technological areas of steel and cast iron, concrete, masonry and cladding. In addition, consensus lists of research needs are discussed in the individual reports (steel/cast iron, concrete, masonry and cladding) which resulted from the working group discussions at the workshop. Two clear conclusions can be reached. They are, that much research is needed and that a great deal of information is already available but not being used.
