Abstract:

The paper summarizes the major technologic features of Automated People Movers, (APM) including Personal Rapid Transit versus Group Rapid Transit concepts, active versus passive vehicles, vehicle size, guideways, service characteristics, and network configuration. It then examines economic and planning considerations that have influenced the feasibility of implementing APM systems in downtown areas and evaluates the prospects for future use in urban revitalization and development.
