Abstract:

The 'hands-on' capability afforded by micros is dramatically reducing the protracted study durations and high computing costs which characterized earlier transportation studies undertaken using mainframe computers. The most beneficial results of this low-cost/rapid-result technology are: (a) the ability to consider a much wider range of options within the study time and budget constraints; (b) the encouragement offered to 'innovate' in terms of the development of study techniques, and the application of those techniques to diverse transportation problems. Case studies demonstrating use of the MOTORS microcomputer transportation planning package, where the above features have been prominent, are cited.
