Part of: Microcomputer Applications Within the Urban Transportation Environment

Abstract:

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has a strong tradition of providing technology transfer and technical assistance to State and local agencies in all areas of transportation engineering and planning. This technology transfer has taken the form of demonstration projects, publications, training courses, mainframe and microcomputer programs, and technical assistance. More recently, the FHWA and the Urban Mass Transportation Administration have sponsored Microcomputer User Support Centers. The author focuses on two topics: (1) how the FHWA has and is supporting the transportation planner and engineer in their use of the microcomputer; and (2) the future direction the FHWA sees for the concept of a Microcomputer Support Center.
