Abstract:

Microcomputers have now been available for nearly a decade in one form or another, and have recently taken on an important role in the transportation engineer's professional life. As a result, certain trends have developed in the use of computers and transportation-related software which have in many instances re-shaped the way we do and sometimes view our work. These trends have identified certain needs of both the software and hardware which have not been fulfilled, as well as some new needs which have been created. The purpose of this paper is to identify these trends and shed some light on the outstanding needs of the transportation professional in the area of microcomputer software and hardware.
