Abstract:

This paper presents the results of studies on the behavior of certain concrete faced rockfill dams (CFRD), which were conducted during the Basic Design of Machadinho dam in Brazil. The behaviors are discussed in comparison with those predicted by stress-strain analyses, focussing the influence of deformability parameters such as Poisson's ratio, anisotropic deformability of rockfill as well as influence of concrete slabs. The apparent difference between 'vertical modulus' of rockfill measured during construction and 'modulus normal do face' after filling which is frequently referred elsewhere, are explained with aid of stress path analyses.
