Part of: Advances in the Art of Testing Soils Under Cyclic Conditions

Abstract:

This paper examines the use of small-scale tests on centrifuges to study a wide range of problems in soil dynamics - including machine foundations, structures and explosion effects. The paper begins with a brief review of the principles and history of centrifuge model testing. Next there is a summary of the special problems associated with dynamic tests. Then, for each of several types of problems, the testing facilities that have been developed are reported and studied performed using these facilities are summarized and discussed. Special attention is given to studies of earthquake-induced liquefaction.
