Abstract:

This paper first discusses methodologies for considering geological uncertainty in tunneling projects and for determining the most economic excavation and support methods under such condition; the paper then describes the management tool, DSST (Decision Support System for Tunneling), which was developed for helping the project staff make these construction decisions under uncertain geological conditions. DSST can be used throughout the entire project cycle. It can provide valuable decision-support information not only during the construction phase but also during the pre-construction phase of a tunneling project.
