Shear Design of Masonry Walls

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: New Analysis Techniques for Structural Masonry

Abstract:

The paper presents a summary of a research project carried out at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich to develop a design method based on the ultimate strength of masonry walls. A general failure criterion for the biaxial compressive strength of masonry is presented. A statically admissible stress field consisting of 'Discrete Compression Diagonals' is shown and lower bounds of the ultimate shear load are calculated using the theory of plasticity.
