Bridging Twin Ports
Serial Information: Civil Engineering—ASCE, 1985, Vol. 55, Issue 7, Pg. 59-59Document Type: Feature article
Abstract:
The Major Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge, part of U. S. Highway 2, connects harbors at Duluth, Minn. and Superior, Wisc. The new highway link was designed to relieve congestion on nearby roadways and to provide access to sites essential for marine development without disrupting residential and commercial areas. The bridge's S shape enables it to cross a shipping channel at nearly right angles to keep navigation safety high and main span costs low. Difficult soil and foundation conditions, winter weather and sensitive environmental conditions were the major problems overcome.
