Abstract:

The Muskingum method of river routing is well established and frequently used. An attempt is made to improve the method by optimal selection of the model parameters. The common linear Muskingum and the less common, nonlinear Muskingum models are considered. For a test case, the Muskingum model parameters are estimated using the conventional approach, using procedures suggested by other researchers, and using the new constrained optimization approach. The performance of each of these fitted models is compared to the others.
