Abstract:

For many years numerical models have been used in groundwater hydrology. In a recent assessment of the availabilty and use of models, a number of problem areas were identified. Some of these are discussed in this paper. A distinction is made between model research and code development on one side and code selection and application on the other. Special attention is given to such aspects of selection as availability, user-friendliness, documentation, code support and maintenance, and code credibility. Finally, some improvements in model use are suggested.
