Diagnosis of Wastewater Treatment Processes

by Douglas M. Johnston, Univ of Washington, Dep of Civil, Engineering, Seattle, WA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Computer Applications in Water Resources

Abstract:

This paper presents an approach to the development of an expert system for aiding the operation of an activated sludge wastewater treatment facility. The expert system incorporates a diagnostic model of the treatment process defined by an expert in the operation of a metropolitan facility in Seattle, Washington. The system is developed from elements of fuzzy set theory to facilitate the incorporation of approximate reasoning and imprecision endemic to complex systems. The paper details the logic structure, the development of a knowledge base specific to the operation of a wastewater treatment facility and their integration in a microcomputer based interactive program.
