Abstract:

A comprehensive computer model for generation planning has been developed and applied to several large-scale power sector master plans. A unique feature of this model is the concurrent consideration of reservoir operations (and the variable nature of the hydrology) with the generation dispatch. The model monitors the system load demand over the planning horizon and dispatches hydroelectric and thermal generation facilities as required to meet load, on a monthly basis. This process is repeated for each of a series of user specified hydrologic sequences. The system reliability, and economic and financial outcome resulting from each of the sequences, are determined and tabular reports with statistics are produced. The model can be used to evaluate alternative generation expansion sequences, tariff structures and other key planning variables by successive applications of the model.
