Abstract:

Acres version of HEC5 possesses enhancements in the logic governing conventional hydropower, pumped-storage, and system power simulation. This paper demonstrates the conventional hydropower capabilities of the program through the use of four test simulations, each using the same hydrologic record, physical site, and turbine characteristic data. To more clearly illustrate the resulting effects on energy production, each test differs only in its power operation policy. Capabilities to be demonstrated include: defining head loss as a function of flow; determining turbine efficiency from turbine flow and net operating head; limitation of power operation by head, flow, or cavitation constraints; simulation of multiple unit installations; and simulation of energy generation using different power operating schemes.
