Abstract:

Founding a proposed safety-related Category I structure of a nuclear power plant on rock socketed caissons necessitated using precision installation techniques. These techniques were chosen to allow the maximum level of confidence in the finished caisson foundations. Complete documentation of the installation was provided by detailed inspections. This paper describes the construction methods used to ensure a quality installation as well as the investigatory procedures used to confirm the adequacy of a suspect installation. The resulting caisson installations are considered to represent class one construction, providing the maximum assurance level in their adequacy short of performing a full load test.
