Abstract:

This paper presents an overview of the major concepts and methods used in reliability-based structural optimization. New formulations related to multicriteria optimization are developed. Comparative results are presented when different criteria are used for the optimum design of a structure under service and/or ultimate reliability constraints. The numerical results are presented in the form of a comparative study based on different optimization formulations with respect to plastic collapse and/or loss of serviceability.
